»Was bedeutet Willensfreiheit für die Stoiker? Alexander von Aphrodisias und der Willensbegriff in der Antike«, in: Existentia 17.1-2 (2007), 137-156.

In his book ‚On Fate’ Alexander of Aphrodisias, who is considered to be the most influential Aristotle Commentator in Antiquity, is facing the stoic opinion on fate. Starting with this text, the article is dealing with two questions. First it will be considered, whether Alexander of Aphrodisias has a concept of free will, before turning to the philosophical opinion of his opponents, the stoics. One purpose of this examination is to show Alexander as well as the Stoics can give an interesting impulse on the modern debate about free will. Furthermore the author wants to demonstrate that Antiquity is not lacking a concept of the will at all, and that even the criteria for free will are realized by Alexander. Finally it will be shown that in regard to the stoics a senseful notion of freedom can be established in spite of causal determinism.
